WORKING METHODOLOGY

EU-GRASP uses a circular approach to the research, using case-studies and going back for theoretical refinements of the concept of multilateralism, reconstruction of this concept through the security lens and finally, a clear approach to what effective multilateralism should mean – in theory and practice – in security. Having this logic in mind, EU-GRASP’s working methodology has three particular characteristics:

  • It is circular (inductive/deductive) to assure the deconstruction, refinement and reconstruction of the concept of multilateralism through the use of case-studies. A deductive / inductive spiral will be adopted, whereby data and theory progressively feed into each other.
  • It is interactive – assuring that the target public provides continuous input, the research goes in the right direction, and its products have a real impact in decision-making.
  • It is prospective – a prospective approach will be applied, through the use of foresight and scenario buildings exercises and aiming at policy recommendations for EU’s present and future roles in the world.

In order to achieve the above mentioned circular – inductive/ deductive approach, the research will be undertaken according to three interconnected streams of research activities: (i) Conceptual analysis; (ii) Case-studies; (iii) Foresight study – accompanied by a permanent policy-dialogue with academia and policy-makers.
